How do I harvest sunflower seeds from the sunflower to plant next year?
Last year, right before they moved, our neighbors gave us some sunflower seeds to plant. They got them from sunflowers they grew in their garden. Well, we planted them, and WOW! Beautiful sunflowers grew! Tall and large blooms. They are in a vase now, and I want to get their seeds and plant more for next year. How do I get seeds from these flowers? Do I cut the big blooms, dry them somehow? I am NOT a green thumb gardener, so the more detail the better for me! Thank you in advance for your suggestions. (I wish I could post a picture, they are just beautiful!)
How do I harvest sunflower seeds from the sunflower to plant next year?
I just laid my sunflowers on a table on the back porch.Took a couple of weeks. They dried out and I sorta bent them backward and the seeds came out. Next time I will try hanging them upside down. Thats how I dry my herbs. Just curious to see how they do that way. Some people put the head of the flower in a paper bag and tie a string around it. There is really no trick. Just keep them dry. We laid some outside and watch the birds have a feast. They had NO trouble getting the seeds out. m
Reply:Hang them upside down in cool dry place and place newspapers on the ground or floor under them. The flowers should dry in a couple of weeks and then you can harvest the seeds.
Reply:They're supposed to be harvested when the back of the flower head turns from green to brown. Before that, the seeds may not be completely ripe, and so may not germinate.
Then let the heads dry completely. Shake out or pick out the seeds when very dry, put in a clean glass jar or other container, and store in a cool, dry place until time to plant next year.
Enjoy them!
Reply:And most important, put them in a place impenatrable to squirrels.
Reply:Wait for them to dry out and just gather the seeds. That's it. They should grow just fine next year. The bloom will wilt by itself anyway. You can cut if off when it starts to hang. Just set it out and it will dry by itself.

Are Salted Sunflower seeds harmful to Hamsters or can they eat it? thank you?
My hamster likes Sunflowers, but the Food I buy her comes with so many different Varieties....and little of sunflower seeds...and she seems to pick through her food just to eat sunflower seeds...mostly....besides the fresh fruits she gets here and there...
Are Salted Sunflower seeds harmful to Hamsters or can they eat it? thank you?
No salt for Hammy . You can get unsalted ones.
Reply:Yes, salted sunflower seeds are bad for any small animal. The extra salt is not needed by them and they can get kidney damage from the extra salt. They should only get them unsalted for treats actually. They are very high in fat and cause obesity if given too many. In turn an obese hamster may become diabetic and will need a very strict diet. If she's picking through her food for them, best thing to do is remove them all together and give them as a treat a few at a time.
I can be emailed for a list of food for a Syrian hamster or for a diabetic/dwarf hamster. They are two different lists so let me know what breed of hamster you have. Email me directly at wolfinator25840@yahoo.com and not by my profile. Yahoo Answers doen't provide enough space for the information I have.
Reply:you can buy them unsalted. then they would be safe.
Reply:i would avoid the salty ones. see i you can buy unsulted ones and just give them as a special treat. They are very fatty
Reply:Don't give your hamster salted sunflower seeds. The salt will make it very thirsty. Buy plain sunflower seeds. You should be able to get them from any supermarket. They usually come deshelled. My hamsters love them!
Reply:i wouldn't give them to the hamster. Not only because of the salt, but sunflower seeds are very fattening for them they are usually processed with some type of oil. Stick with the one specifically for little critters.
Reply:Not goo....buy him unsalted, raw seeds. Can find them with the birdseed.
Reply:Don't give them the seeds (be on the safer side)
Reply:Actually salted sunflower seeds are ok to feed to a hamster.Though you don't want to over do it.Feeding them a few each week in my experience has never caused them harm.Their natural metabolism wont allow them to retain water or get fat. They make mineral stones for hamsters which contain salt.Salt is a natural part of their diet when in the wild. They can die if they don't get the proper amount of salt as well as a few other minerals. In case you wish to be organic with your hamster they do require animal protein for their health.

Sunflower seeds and sprouting help!?
for the sunflower seed if they were cooked no. if not the ones in the shell will sprout. The apple seeds should under no cercumstanes be givin to a bird. water mellon seeds will sprout.
Reply:Sunflower seeds - depends on the processing.
It is best to go and by planting seeds rather than the roasted and salted ones.
Apple seeds will sprout.
Watermelon seeds should sprout, but it depends on whether it is from a hybrid.
Reply:Don't offer apple seed or watermelon seed sprouted to your birds at all. They're toxic.
For the sunflower seed. There are many ways you can sprout them. The already shelled ones will probably not sprout %26amp; any other sunflower or other seed must be fresh to sprout.
For best nutrition for birds they should only just be sprouted, alternatively you can soak the for 24 hours for good nutrition.
Also don't over do it the sunflower seeds, try all kinds of others too as well as things like mung beans, peas etc.
You can have a look at this sprouting website.

3 more sunflower root questions *PLEASE HELP*?
ok....i have 3 more questions on sunflower roots please help me
1.what is the purpose of the root?
2.what color is the root
3.how do they look? ( diagaram if you can find one!)
3 more sunflower root questions *PLEASE HELP*?
By "sunflower" do you mean Helianthus annuus?
If that's the case, it's a dicot-type taproot. Big main root, with lots of little root hairs and secondary roots branching from it. The root hairs are the things that do the primary nutrient and water absorbing, because of their high surface area. Sometimes these roots can be associated with mychorrizal fungi to enhance nutrient and water uptake, but i'm not sure if this particular species does.
They're usually a pale white/tan/brown color - NOT green, because roots usually don't photosynthesize.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taproot
That's a typical dicot taproot. The dandelion (taraxacum) on the page is in the same family as helianthus, so it wouldn't suprise me if they were largely superficially similiar.

I love sunflower seeds, and i think i am addicted to them lol..?
Is it bad to eat a lot of sunflower seeds? Would this make me gain weight? TY
I love sunflower seeds, and i think i am addicted to them lol..?
Not unless you eat buckets of them. Actually sunflower seats are quite healthy snack. So much better than munching on potato chips instead- and they are full of vitamin E.
High protein, low carbohydrate diets are here to stay; thus it is even more important than ever to make sure they are full of naturally healthy foods such as sunflower seeds. Sunflower seeds are the best whole-food source of Vitamin E. They provide an ideal heart-healthy profile, are high in protein, and naturally low in carbohydrate.
So, keep on munching, my friend.
Reply:You will most likely gain weight if that is all you eat. They are full of fat, but also a lot of other good stuff for you.
Try pumpkin seeds sometimes and you will change your mind as to which is best.
Reply:You might retain water from the salt, but the seeds themselves are nutritious...I'd much rather be addicted to sunflower seeds than some other things out there!
Reply:if you eat the ones covered in salt your blood pressure is going to go through th roof
Reply:no and no and yes and no
Reply:Sunflower seeds are good for you.
More people should be eating them. Much better than potato chips.
You'll be getting: Fibre, protein, vit E, magnesium, selenium and phytols that lower your cholesterol.
Eat MORE!
(You're not really addicted unless you go into withdrawal when you don't get any! ;-)
Reply:Sunflower seeds are amazing, but I would not eat them constantly, because a large amount of any substance can cause constipation and that's not very much fun. So enjoy your sunflower seeds in moderation, and don't worry about gaining weight. enjoy=)
Reply:No it won't it will just make you dehrayted from all the salt
Reply:Just wait till the flower grows out of your ****!
Reply:its not bad, but it might be hard on your stomach. it won't make you gain weight, becuase it is just fiber. do eat it all day long though.
Reply:they can but not much.
Reply:I thought I was the only one who noticed that sunflower seeds are addictive! lol! I think that they kinda make your nerves bad too. Just eat them in moderation. Too much of anything is not good. Too much salt can lead to dehydration, high blood pressure and heart disease. Drink more fluids when you have the desire for the sunflower seeds, eventually the addiction will go away! That's what I did and it worked for me!
Reply:Hahahaha, my mom used to have the same problem....haha, she would get them like everyday and eat them and have the shells in cups in her car, all over the place x3.She's stopped,You'll get tired of it soon..

is there any sunflower fields in or anywhere near los angeles, any good photography spots would be nice.
Photography spots, sunflower field to los angeles?
Kinda the wrong time of year to find flowers not currently in hot houses. Give it about 3 months for them to show up.
Reply:I agree about the flower fields in Carlsbad, and yes it is early by about 3 months, but the answer about hothouses is not true - I have a rose or two right now near my south facing wall at my house in a L.A. beach city. I see also kalenchoes, pansies and my sons' tomato plants (same south facing wall) has fruit and flowers. Try Descanso Gardens in La Canada/Flintridge - there is always something growing there, and soon the camellias will be blooming.
Reply:Try Carlsbad flower fields. It's a little far from Los Angeles, but you're sure to find some sunflowers there!

Can eating sunflower seeds whole hurt you?
I eat sunflower seeds whole (chew them) .. can it hurt your insides?
Can eating sunflower seeds whole hurt you?
Not at all, I do it all the time....plus...you get the nutrients from the shell!!!
Reply:no it will not I do the same thing !!
Reply:The hulls are not edible and shouldn't be eaten as they could damage your intestinal tract since they are not digestible. Either spit out the hulls or buy them shelled.
Reply:I wouldn't think so.
Its just like eating part of the seed.
Reply:dont eat them hole crack them open eat the seed out and spit the sheel out !
Reply:They probably won't hurt you as long as you don't have diverticulosis. Diverticulosis is when pouches form in your intestine walls from too much pressure inside them, and eating seeds, nuts, popcorn, jerky, and other things like that can irritate the pouches and cause them to become inflamed (that's when it becomes diverticulitis and it can cause the pouches to burst--which is an emergency).
To prevent diverticulosis, keep yourself well-hydrated and eat enough fiber to keep the pressure in your intestines low.
Enjoy those sunflower seeds! The outisde parts are similar to the part of popcorn that we can't digest, and we still eat that safely.
Reply:I would think so .I would think it could tear your intestine and cut your rectum , maybe even leading to an infection coming out.
Reply:It might tickle when it comes out but won't hurt you.

When do sunflower seeds expire?
I wanted to plant some sunflower seeds I have in the garage, but I'm not sure if they're expired. They might be as old as 4 years.
When do sunflower seeds expire?
depending on the conditions it was kept under it might still be good, if seeds are kept cold and dry they can last a while (especially sunflower seeds) but if there was any dampness or moisture in your garage they will probley not sprout.
then again if there is excessive heat it might dry the seed out to - but thats unlikely.
the only way you will know is just try planting them, besides sunflowers sprout quickly and some of the strongest plants and seeds so it couldnt hurt to just throw them in the ground and see what comes of it.
Reply:NEVER! The seed will wait for hundreds of years! Until then it is dormant. So forever unless it has the right conditions to survive.

Sunflower wedding?
I am thinking of a sunflower wedding in Sept 2007 in Wisconsin. I wanted to do black and white. But maybe I should change directions! Where can I find sunflower cookie cutters, invites etc? Please help! What else would I need to help plan this wedding?
Sunflower wedding?
Go to Jean M. They have a web site and you can oder a catalog. I am sure that they have sunflower themed this and that. I purchased my leaf cookie cutters from them. They also on-line customer service so you can ask them questions. I hope that I helped you out.
Reply:Go to www.theknot.com and read the discussion boards...you will get lots of ideas.
As far as finding sunflower cookie cutters, I just did a quick yahoo search and several links popped up. you just need to look. Same thing goes for the invites - just do a search and lots will come up.
Read up on theknot.com. There will be lots of advice and there are checklists you can look at which will tell you exactly what you need to be doing.
Reply:Some people are scared of sunflowers. Have it indoors, in a church or American Legion hall, and don't waste too much $$$ on it, you're regret it in coming years, when you can't afford to get the dishwasher fixed!
Reply:Don't change directions...black and white will look beautiful with sunflowers! You can find fantastic invites at Jean M, or you can make them yourself...
As for favors, you can hand out mini terra-cotta pots woth a package of sunflower seeds...tie a black and white ribbon around the top of the pot and put a little tag with your names and wedding date on them.
If you need anything else, please feel free to email me through my website!
Reply:This sounds like a beautiful idea...really fun and pretty.
You may want to talk with a manager at your local craft store, a lot of time even if they aren't carrying the sunflower cookie cutters or other stuff, they have the resources to help.
Reply:I went to a black white wedding once and it was very elegant, you should stick with that cause you can add what ever color you want in that including flowers. Sunflowers will be kinda gaudy.

Rats and Sunflower Seeds ?
I was wondering if I can give my rats the unshelled SALTED sunflower seeds. I can't seem to find unsalted anywhere.
Rats and Sunflower Seeds ?
You can, but only a few. The salt isn't good for their little bodies, its ALOT of salt in such a small package.
Despite what someone said, DO NOT give RAW peanuts. ever, or any raw bean.
Sunflower seeds in shells are fine to give to them, I do buy a little mixed bag of nuts and seeds at the grocery store once in a while, They can have almonds, walnuts, all that fun stuff, in the shell. Its a toy and a treat combined. It makes them work to get at the good stuff.
Try buying the unsalted, shelled sunflower seeds, you should be able to find them. Like I said, only give them a few of the salted ones, because they are very salty for them.
Reply:dont risk it...better safe than sorry...
Reply:It should be fine, just don't give too many. Try looking in the vegetable department @ walmart. I know they have raw peanuts and I think they have sunflower seeds too or look in the bird seed %26amp; get a bag there.
Reply:I buy my sunflower seeds from the local farm store. They carry it cheap.
Reply:to much salt can be bad for thier health but you should also be careful how many sunflower seeds they eat, they are like the mars bars of the rattie world! giving them too much "bad" foods can lead to health problems such as skin irritations.
Reply:yes u can but only in moderation. too much salt isn't good for them.
Reply:Salted probably won't do her much harm, apart from her needing more water. Try looking in the pet department at supermarkets. They are bound to have a huge pack of bird seed sunflower seeds. Also look in garden shops at the seeds, and at petshops.
Sunflowers can be fattening to mice, and its probably the same as rats, so I would limit them to special treats. :) I hope this helps you
Reply:its safer to give em a cookie lol. Rat's should eat shelled nuts and seeds. I used to own two. I fed em everything I ate...they are rats. lol. Think Templeton from Charlotte's Web. Just feed em whatever you got lieing around.
Reply:You can get them at the pet store. If they don't have them by the rodent food, check by the birdseed. I buy "No waste" birdseed that has unshelled and unsalted sunflower seeds.
Reply:no the salt is bad for them you can find unsalted sunflower seeds in the wild birdfood area of your local wal mart or other store. plus they are way cheaper there just dont give them alot of them due to there high fat content.

Going Vegetarian? Sunflower Seeds?
I want to become a vegetarian and I'm looking around for foods that have good protein. Are sunflower seeds a good source of protein? What are some others (no nuts plz i'm allergic)?
Also what are some non-meat foods that are good sources of iron?
Going Vegetarian? Sunflower Seeds?
Hey,
Congrats on turning to a veggie. I am completely veggie. You will have loads and loads of food options. It will take a while to get used to it, but going forward you will not like to eat meat or chicken or sea food.
Veggie proteins foods are Indian Cheese ( paneer ) available in Indian stores, red kidney beans, black beans , chick peas soya bean has good amount of protein too.
Please see these links for more information
http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm
Reply:Brocolli has a lot of iron.
Lentils, split peas, garbanzo and soy beans are all great sources of protein and essential amino acids.
Are you going vegan or will you still consume milk products? If going vegetarian and still consuming milk products I'd recommend buying organic to avoid hormones and antibiotics.
Reply:Sunflower seeds are great for protein and iron. Protein can be found in soymilk, beans, legumes, whole grain products, other seeds, etc.
Iron can be found in fortified milks/soymilks, kale, spinach, collards, other dark greens, beans (incl. soy, black, pinto, lentils, kidney, navy, etc.)
Reply:PROTEIN IN LEGUMES: Garbanzo beans, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Navy beans, Soybeans, Split peas
PROTEIN IN GRAINS: Barley, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Millet, Oatmeal, Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat, hard red, Wild rice
VEGETABLE PROTEIN: Artichokes, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green peas, Green pepper, Kale, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard green, Onions, Potatoes, Spinach, Tomatoes, Turnip greens, Watercress, Yams, Zucchini
PROTEIN IN FRUITS: Apple, Banana, Cantaloupe, Grape, Grapefruit, Honeydew melon, Orange, Papaya, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Strawberry, Tangerine, Watermelon
PROTEIN IN NUTS AND SEEDS: Almonds, Cashews, Filberts, Hemp Seeds, Peanuts, Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds, Sunflower seeds, Walnuts (black)
One excellent ingredient to look for is hemp seed protein. Hemp seed is an nutritious dietary source of easily digestible gluten-free protein. It provides a well-balanced array of all the amino acids, including 34.6 grams of protein for each 100 grams. The fatty acid profile of the hemp seed is extremely beneficial, containing omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in a virtually ideal ratio. Other beneficial aspects of hemp seed include a strongly favorable unsaturated-to-saturated fat ratio; a high content of antioxidants; and a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.
Additionally, super green foods provide an excellent source of protein (70% in some cases).
Iron
-------
Only about one fifth of the iron in a standard diet comes from meat. Dairy products are deficient in iron. The richest plant sources are dark green vegetables, soy products and legumes, whole grains, dried fruits, nuts and seeds. Cooking with cast-iron pots also contributes to dietary intake. Adding fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C to your meals (such as citrus, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, kale or tomatoes) enhances iron absorption. Foods that decrease absorption include: tea, coffee, milk products, spinach, rhubarb, Swiss chard and chocolate.
Also what are some non-meat foods that are good sources of iron?

Sunflower seed cookies? Anyone know this brand, or at least how to make them?!!?
Well I was at HyVee yesterday, and in their "natural" or "organic" food section they had samples of these small (the package called them petite) sunflower seed cookies. I didn't think to read the ingredients, and I didn't read the package (how stupid of me!)..and i LOVED these cookies. omg they were amazing. The package was like a little bag and had light green coloring. that's all i remember about the product. Anyone have any idea what brand they were?
Also, these cookies were sooo good..i wanted to make some. like wow, they were amazing. it tasted like sugar cookies with sunflower seeds in them (tastes better than it sounds)..anyone have recipies for this kind of cookie?!

Why don't you call the store and ask them what brand they were. I'm sure they'll gladly tell you! Or, better yet, drive back to the store and just buy some!
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 very ripe medium bananas, peeled and mashed
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup granulated white sugar
1/2 cup shelled sunflower seeds
1/2 cup miniature chocolate chips or dried fruit
PREPARATION:
Whisk together flour and baking soda in a small bowl. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat bananas, oil, and sugar on medium speed until thoroughly combined.
Add flour mixture half at a time, beating to incorporate. Fold in sunflower seeds and chocolate chips.
Refrigerate cookie dough for 45 minutes to 1 hour. (Cold dough helps keep the cookies from spreading.)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line baking sheets with Silpats or parchment paper.
Scoop about 1 teaspoonful of cookie dough for each cookie and place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
Yield: about 36 cookies

Sunflower Reproduction!!!?
While I was finishing up a project for school, I realised that I had missed one of the most important details. I had to create a poster about a plant of my choice, the sunflower. I had forgotten to add a diagram of the flower's reproductive parts. Now I realise that the sunflower was a bad choice, due to the fact that I do not know where its reproductive organs are located. Anyone who can find a diagram of this for me, completely labeled will be a hero to me for the rest of my life! If I don't finish this, I'll probably fail for the year. Please help soon!!!
Sunflower Reproduction!!!?
The sunflower is a member of the Asteraceae family - that is it has a head composed of many flowers. Try these two links, and don't give up!!

Sunflower Garden?
I live in Georgia and I want to plant a small sunflower garden. Growing up, my grandfather had a large field and I loved walking through the field with him. It was his favorite flower and now that's he's passed on, I want to plant my own garden as a memorial.
I love sunflowers, but the only thing I know about them is how they look. When is the best time to plant them? How do I plant them? Do they need any special "food" when I plant them? How far apart? How do I take care of them? I appreciate any help.
Sunflower Garden?
Plant them in the spring. You can start them in pots inside, or direct seed.
If you plant a variety, including the ones that have smaller heads, but flowers all over the plant, rather that one big one - those self-sow freely and often come back on their own the following year.
The finches around here love all the sunflowers.
When you direst sow, or transplant, keep them watered til they establish. They don't need speical food. And the volunteers that come up susequent years - I've never had to do anything with - they don't seem to need me at all!
Reply:GET THE PACKETS OF SEED OR A DEAD GIANT ONE...PUT TWO OR THREE OF THE SEEDS IN EACH HOLE IN A GOOD SOIL....THEY ARE EASY BUT NEED WATER....THEY COME UP IN ABOUT A WEEK AS TWO LITTLE LEAVES WITH THE SEED STUCK TO ONE...JUST WATER IT AND MAKE SURE ITS GOOD SOIL..... THERES ALOT OF DIFFERENT VARIETIES...BUT THE BIGGER THE BETTER...
Reply:That sounds beautiful, you don't have to do much to sunflowers. you plant them in the spring. I have even just scatterd seeds and had them come up. They are my favorite.
