Biodiesel...vegetable or sunflower oil?..is there a difference?

we was told that sunflower could be used the same...is this true..thinking of making our own..any advice would be great...

Biodiesel...vegetable or sunflower oil?..is there a difference?
I run wvo, so cost is zero.Olive oil has the highest Cetane. But people don't use much because of price.Peanut oil runs well, but soy oil is the cheapest.

Biodiesel made from wvo should retail at $2.50 per gallon, but the biodiesel makers are greedy too.
Reply:The thing is, there is a worldwide fuss now about biofuels and agricultural fields are being used to produce it. There is a stir now whether it actually is worth it. It's production is reducing availability of food and hiking up the price. This is really bad for empoverished countries. In a recent TIME (The Clean Energy Myth, April 7th 2008), the biofuel myth is revealed as being only a new way to hike up food prices and speed global warming.
Reply:Guess who bought up all the Hydrogen producing facilities in the USA? the BIG oil companies!

Because big oil companies have a huge infrastructure already in place for diesel and gasoline. They are not about to change it for nothing.

We won't see very much done with H2 because big oil won't allow it.
Reply:they are not significantly different.

however, have you noticed the price increase in milk, vegetables, etc., lately.

and meat will be following it real soon, if it hasn't already.

mind you, this is a serious problem, and there are no good answers.

but bio-fuel is not going to be particularly helpful.

there just is not sufficient growing capacity for both food and fuel.
Reply:sunflower oil is vegetable oil. a compression ignition engine(diesel) will run on anything that contains enough hydrocarbons.so will a jet engine.
Reply:A diesel engine can burn all oils even lube oil. All oil comes from plants ,it is how the energy from the sun is stored. The fossil fuel doesn't come from animal but plants.
Reply:Well, since sunflower oil is vegetable oil, I would say no difference.
Reply:I currently run Bio Fuel (straight vegetable) in a 1999 Dodge 3500 truck. But all Cummins engines were modified from the factory to run on BioD since around 1992 without any modification.

Most vehicles are already equipped to run on Alternative Energy. In fact you’re probably even driving one right now and didn’t even know it. Go to www agua-luna com for a list of this vehicles

Ethanol doesn’t go bad like petroleum it’s just Alcohol. It’s what preserves your wine and gets better as the years go by.

Ethanol is a much cleaner fuel than petrol (gasoline):

It is a renewable fuel made from plants

It is not a fossil-fuel: manufacturing it and burning it does not increase the greenhouse effect

It provides high octane at low cost as an alternative to harmful fuel additives

Ethanol blends can be used in all petrol engines without modifications

Ethanol is biodegradable without harmful effects on the environment

It significantly reduces harmful exhaust emissions

Ethanol's high oxygen content reduces carbon monoxide levels more than any other oxygenate: by 25-30%, according to the US EPA

Ethanol blends dramatically reduce emissions of hydrocarbons, a major contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer

High-level ethanol blends reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 20%

Ethanol can reduce net carbon dioxide emissions by up to 100% on a full life-cycle basis

High-level ethanol blends can reduce emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by 30% or more (VOCs are major sources of ground-level ozone formation)

As an octane enhancer, ethanol can cut emissions of cancer-causing benzene and butadiene by more than 50%

Sulphur dioxide and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions are significantly decreased with ethanol.

Lastly and my favorite.. It can be made at home.

It will cost about $1.10 to $1.20/gal to make the alcohol from various feed-stocks like corn, barley, potatoes, or Jerusalem artichokes. You will also have by-products which you can sell or use as animal feed, reducing the total cost down to about $.95/gal.

Biofuel is recognized by both the US Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy as an alternative fuel, and qualifies for mandated programs under the Clean Air Act Amendments and the Environmental Protection Act of 1992 (EPAct).

USDA Clears Air with Biofuel: Buses and other diesel-burning vehicles run cleaner if they mix biofuel with regular diesel fuel, said the US Department of Agriculture at a biofuel fuel seminar at a USDA research center.

Conversely most major automotive manufacturers (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, etc) recommend the use of bio fuels, and nearly every car manufacturer in the world approves ethanol blends in their warranty coverage.

In fact your probably even driving an ethanol car and didn't even know it.

The trick is finding fuel.

I've been producing biofuel for about 3 years now, it's not extremely difficult. Basically you need general household ingredients, a processor (or still for ethanol) and some used oil. Blend it, let separate, screen and use. I complied a guide a while back to help walk you threw the process step by step, just email me or check out..

Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if you’d like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, I’m willing to walk you step by step threw the process. I’ve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com on the subject. I also offer online and on-site workshops, seminars and internships to help others help the environment.

When will my sunflower seeds grow?

I planted them on wednesday. They are sky scarper sunflower seeds. I planted them in many places in my garden including pots to give them better chances of growing.

My question is when will a green stem or leaf apper from the soil??

I live in Las Vegas, NV and its the right season to plant them according to the package.

When will my sunflower seeds grow?
You may have to wait anything up to three weeks but it will probably be a lot less - depends on lots of things like freshnenss of seed, hardness of the seed coating, amount of moisture in the soil etc. As you live in a dry area be sure you don't let the soil dry out completely, as when the seed has started to grow it will die if it dries out before its got going.

Good luck.
Reply:My mammoth sunflowers usually start popping up 1-2 weeks after planting. You should keep the soil moist if the soil is really dry - you don't want the seedling to dry out.

Sometimes the squirrels dig mine up after I plant them!

Feeding a horse sunflower seeds?

my friend says she feeds her horse sunflower seeds and she really likes it (shell too)

%26amp;%26amp; i was wondering if anyone else does it and if is ok for my horse. also what other kinds of treats do you feed your horses besides apples and carrots.

Feeding a horse sunflower seeds?
Shells aren't great for people - they can bind you up - too many would probably do the same to your horse. A few wouldn't be a big issue but I wouldn't let them munch down a bag full. I had a mare that loved black berries - we would stop on our trail rides and munch on them. One of my geldings likes junk food. There was a ranch hand that used to feed hamburgers to one of the studs in the barn - freaked me out but the horse loved them.

Fairy on a Sunflower image?

Anyone know of a nice one??

My aunt saw one recently in a small pink book and would like to use it as a tattoo, however now she cannot locate the image and is unsure of the artist or book title. She had seen it in a store not anywhere near us so I hope maybe someone can help.

Thank you!

OH - have spent LOTS of time in the image search, no luck...

When is the sunflower blossom season in central Queensland, Australia?

I am thinking about visiting Springsure and Emerald to see sunflower fields.

When is the sunflower blossom season in central Queensland, Australia?
Hi ,a crop of Sunflowers are planted usually during summer and will and be in full bloom around mid May through to June.See link below.I't s wonderfull sight to drive past miles and miles of them.
Reply:thanks for choosing my answer as the best :D Report It

Reply:The sunflowers are coming out now. They are beautiful
Reply:Not too many sunflowers really close to Springsure. (I am a regular visitor to the town) but there are plenty around Emerald (born there) Go to Springsure to see the Virgin Rock just on the north side of town - it's floodlight at night. Also to see the Old Rainworth Fort about 10km along the Wealwandangie Road.

Le corbusier's Sunflower house?

I remember seeing a b/w photo in an architecture book (pre WWII - the photo that is, not me) of a family house somewhere in France built on a turntable so it can rotate through the day to track the sun - hence the name Sunflower. Was convinced that it was Le Corbusier's but haven't been able to find any reference at all. Anywhere. Only other similar house is Heliotrope by Rolf Disch but it's definitely not it. Would definitely appreciate some help. Cheerio

Le corbusier's Sunflower house?
Modern bio-solar houses are a high-tech, ecology-friendly version of what Le Corbusier called "a machine for living."

He was obsessed with solar energy, so the idea of his putting revoloving elements within his buildings - natrually moved to the structure itself.

as a child I saw a short documentary about it on "Tomorow's World" = it swiveled on its base to follow the sun - a better solution to screen glare than getting up every ten minutes and drawing the curtain a little further closed each time...

i can't recall it's exact name however
