Sunflower help!?!?!!?!?!?

ok so for a math project we need to grow a sunflower and measure it every week. the person with the tallest sunflower gets extra credit. any tips on doing this project? im not a good gardener at all...

Sunflower help!?!?!!?!?!?
Start with really nice soil, well draining potting soil. Add some 'Osmacote' or other timed release fertilizer. And get some triple 20 water soluble fertilizer. Or regular 'Miricale Gro' type. Use the fertilizer every time you water. If you water it on the leaves it gets in fast. "Foliar Feeding." This is how we did greenhouse plants. Just be sure you let the water/fertilizer drain well too. Good drainage is a key thing.

Bright light. Good sunshine. You can keep a light on it all night too. A balanced light for plants, grow bulb.

And air circulation is needed. Use a fan if indoors.

Get those Mammoth seeds. They really are larger plants.

Keep good notes of everything you do. You might get extra credit for good notes too. Like how much fertilizer and water and light and ...

Use a large pot. Maybe a #15 if you want it huge. Biggest pot you can move around. Or put it in the ground. Though if the soil you plant it in isn't the best it will show. So I suggest straight potting soil with liquid fertilizer As I noted above.

And do several plants. Keep notes on them all.
Reply:First, select your seeds carefully. There are many variety's of sunflowers and they all grow different heights.

The tallest variety is "Mammoth" It gets about 10 - 12 ft. tall and has one flower, often over 3 ft. across.

Second, plant directly in the ground. Every time you transplant it from pot to pot to ground, you will stunt the growth a little bit and it will take a couple of weeks to recover.

Protect the seed and new plant from slugs and other predators that will make a meal of your Sun Flower. Cut the bottom off of a Plastic Cup and bury it in the ground around your plant so Predators can't get to it.

Third, make sure the soil is rich loamy dirt. Fertilize lightly after the Sun Flower is about 6 inches tall, and fertilize every 3 weeks after that. Water as necessary to keep it growing.

Lastly, plant more than one seed as even under ideal conditions sometimes a plant won't grow as tall as the others around it for some unknown reason.
