Growing sunflower seeds?

My family is having a Competition who can grow the tallest sunflower starting off with just a seed. So any tips would be nice like how much sun they need and what to water them with.

Thanks

Growing sunflower seeds?
Start the seed directly in the ground(sunflowers don't transplant well) Full sun....all day if possible and fertilize every couple weeks with some Mircle Grow when you water. Mulch around the base of the plant to hold in moisture and keep the soil cooler in hot weather. You may have to stake the plant unless there are others around it, or the wind may take it down. Also, your choice of sunflower seed type will affect the size. I think the striped seeds like you feed to the birds grow larger than the "black oil" variety that also are fed to birds. But either of these would be a good choice versus some of the more decorative types you can buy.
Reply:Put your stake in early and be sure it is tall enough. Adding it later will trash the roots of a mature plant. I also like the striped ones but for the best results buy them in a packet, in the garden center of your local Wal Mart ect instead of picking through the bird feed for them. They are bred to grow larger and are much better seeds. Also check the date on the seed packet to be sure they are fresh and not last years seed. Good Luck!
