Can eating sunflower seeds cause appendicitis?

I heard a rumor saying that if you eat too many sunflower seeds you can get appendicitis. Is this true?

Can eating sunflower seeds cause appendicitis?
I would really doubt it... I know a lot of people who like sunflower seeds and i can't imagine how sunflower seeds could be so different from other seeds and cause such an illness
Reply:Since appendicitis is an inflamed appendix, sunflower seeds do not cause it. When I was growing up (a long time ago) we were told that if you bit your fingernails it would cause appendicitis. Chronic bowel problems are probably resonsible for some cases but most of the time the cause isn't known.
Reply:That's a misconception. Sunflower seeds and all seeds are more likely to aggravate existing divertulosis resulting in diverticulitis.
Reply:No sunflower seeds will cause appendicitis. If that was a definite you would be able to buy them.
Reply:I had appendicitis and had my appendix removed. Fortunately it didn't rupture. Appendicitis is normally caused when some bit of food gets "stuck" in the appendix and doesn't work itself back out. Bacteria begins to grow until appendicitis happens. I know exactly what I ate that caused mine, some old raw brocolli that was the left overs on a buffet table, I ate it for the fiber because it was "good" for me. It tasted terrible, not spoiled, just gross. I think eating sunflower seeds is healthy, provided you drink plenty of liquids with them. I can see why some people might generalize that they cause appendicitis, but use common sence and don't eat two pounds at one sitting or eat any other dry foods without plenty of liquids.
Reply:probably not
