Is a sunflower seed considered a nut?

My son is allergic to nuts and asked if he could eat sunflower seeds. I said no, but i really wasn't sure.

Is a sunflower seed considered a nut?
Yes it is according to the USDA. We have to declare it on our labels as an allergen. It is considered in the nut family.

However you may want to consult with your Dr. because some nuts are considered okay. You may want to run some full allergen tests to determine the severity of the allergic reaction.
Reply:Look at the name hon.
Reply:No , Its a seed.
Reply:NO its a seed cuz its a seed give him some dang sunflower seeds
Reply:I'd say it was a seed rather than a nut but check with Doc before giving him any
Reply:Dumb question. If ur his mother ur the one who should have asked the doctor to be sure whether he could eat them or not
Reply:Yes it is
Reply:maichel has correctly described it as seed. Oil is extrracted from this seed which is used in cooking. You can also powder it and make some pungent 'chutni' for eating.

No ad verse effects have been observed in the consumption of these seeds. If your son is alllergic only to nuts I do not feel these seeds will ad versely affect him.
Reply:sunflower seeds are not nuts, they come from the ripened head of sunflowers. Your son may still me allergic to them. Is he allergic to all nuts or just peanuts. Proceed with caution
Reply:A sunflower seed is a nut, so if your son is allergic to nuts then NO Do Not Let Him Eat Them.
Reply:Sorry I don't know, but google it and you might get the right information
Reply:im not exactally sure because many people say yes but many say no so really i would not take the risk ask your doctor and if you do give it to him watch him to see if he reacts to it
Reply:No, it's a seed, put simply.
Reply:no its a seed
Reply:Hmmm it is a seed, not a nut exactly...I would check with your Dr has I'm sure he did some sort of testing to see if he was allergic to nuts.
