i have a newly sprouted sunflower seed and it keeps growing but when it grows huge leaves they die and new leaves grow why is that?

You should place it by a window, and water it at least a little bit each day. Using fertilizers also help.

Sowing sunflower seeds!!?
I bougth a packet of sunflower seeds and it says to sow 18 inches apart. Anyway what I want to know when sowing them do you just place one seed 18 inches apart? Or is it better to sow 2 or 3 seeds together and then sow another 2 or 3 seeds 18 down?? Its just that 1 or 2 of them may not sow, so by sowing 2 or 3 together that will improve the chances of at least one of them sowing. because I want to plant them evenly all along one side of the wall.

Germinating sunflower seeds?
I recently planted about 20 different varieties of sunflower seeds. About 5 of these popped after 4 or 5 days, it has now been 10 days and no sign of the rest. Is this normal ? If so, when can I expect to see them?

Reply:My favorite, the Mammoth Russian Sunflower, can take up to 14 days for germination. Also make sure the soil is draining properly. They can take a drought, so over watering can sometimes be a factor in slow germination. Test the soil with your finger. If the soil is wet sooner than 1/2" deep, it may be too much water. After the plant is well established a depth of 4" to wet/moist soil is more appropriate. :)
Reply:I recently bought 6 varieties of sunflower and, rather than sow them outdoors like it said on the packet, I popped them in a propogator to give them the best start. Mine have taken anything from a week to a week and a half to germinate but at least I know that this way I will be guaranteed some plants! Some of the varieties take longer than others I guess but it all depends on where you have sown them, how deeply, what the soil conditions are like and whether they are getting enough sun and water.
I think you'll just have to suck it and see, if a month has passed and there is still no sign of anything happening then the rest have perished in one way or another!

The show up on my back lawn by the thousands every spring because I feed the seeds to the birds and squirrels.
Have you planted those nice red sunflowers? They looked awesome in the Burpee catalog.

What is happening with my young sunflower sprout?
My sunflower sprout is planted in a cup of fertilized potting soil. It is 9.5 inches tall and has 3 pairs of leaves, with 1 very young pair of buds near the top. Most of the stem is covered in little white fuzzy hairs. The bottom pair of leaves is turning yellow and limp, does anyone know why? I am planning to replant the sunflower soon. Should I add fertilizer? I remember the same thing happened to a friend of mine but it was planted in open soil outside. I water it every few days and it is sprouted VERY quickly when I planted it. It is a black oil sunflower and I got the seed from a bird feeder. Does anyone know why the bottom pair of leaves is turning yellow?

At your plant's stage it is ready for a bigger pot. The yellow leaves are due to watering. The bigger the plant, smaller the pot - harder it is to maintain ideal water conditions. Replanting it into a 1 gal pot will keep it going awhile once it gets over that shock or you could just be brave and put it in the ground. Good luck.

Are sunflower seed and flax seeds in the same category as nuts? If the doctor said you cannot have nuts, does that include these also? I forgot to ask him. I would like to know before I am able to talk to him again.

Now this is not to say that sunflower seeds and the sort would have the same affect on your body's chemistry as the usual nuts we are most familar with. Just like if somebody were allergic to peanuts they may well be able to eat walnuts with absolutely no ill effects.
So in closing I could put this way: All nuts are seeds, but not all seeds are neccesarily nuts. To error on the side of caution I would recommend you avoid all nuts and seeds until you can consult with your doctor further.

Back in December, I came across the concept of "Oil Pulling", or oil swishing. Basically you swish or 'pull' oil through and in and around your mouth, and then spit it out.
I began swishing sunflower oil in my mouth for 10-15 minutes in the mornings...
I noticed a change within 3 days, but I was skeptical and wanted to be absolutely certain.
I started doing this December 15th. I can honestly say that the plaque and tartar are gone and my teeth are whiter.
They're also much thicker and feel more solid in my mouth. Plus my gums are improving quite a bit.
Six months ago, I was looking at having all my teeth pulled and getting dentures. I don't have to do that anymore. :)

If plantable, I would say no since you can't expect everyone to go home and plant them...it would be a waste of money. I always recommend something edible which can be as simple as M%26amp;Ms or Ghirardelli chocolates (which you can get in fall colors as autumn approaches.) Another idea might be to make fall themed cookies (in the shape of leaves) and put them in cookie bags

Sunflower Seeds?
Hey all, lately, these past two weeks, i've been snacking on salted sunflower seeds like no other. The reason i like them is because of the salt, but lately Ive also noticed bags under my eyes which may be the result of dehydration caused by the salted seeds...I eat A LOT like we bought two jumbo bags, each about the size of a watermelon, and I would say a contributed to a lot of that, so I was wondering if this much salt is gonna own me in the long run? thanks

Mother's Day Sunflower?
So I have a kindergartener, and like every kindergartener since the beginning of time, he has planted me the Mother's Day sunflower in the plastic cup.
The thing is, I have never planted a thing in my life. Never.
Now last week I put it on the patio (we live in an apartment) to get lots of sun. (It is a sunflower, after all). A few nights later a huge storm came through and knocked it off the balcony, crashing it to the ground. The soil was half gone, and filled with water.
Being the mommy that I am, I didn't want to break his heart and tell him that his very first MD gift was ruined, so I gathered my things, and snuckoff to Wal-Mart. I got new soil, and new seeds, and replanted. That was two days ago.
Today, I see a sprout! Is this the original seed? Is this the new seed? How can this be?! I just planted them two days ago! And now what do I do?
Jeepers creepers! Who knew one little gift could be so much work!

I planted a bunch of sunflowers with my kids (and a whole bunch of other things) the day before mother's day, and quite a few of the sunflowers already sprouted by the middle of the week. Sunflowers were the first thing to come out. They grow very fast. You will be amazed.
I doubt this is the new seed, but it is possible if the pot was kept very warm (like 75-90 degrees it could sprout that fast.
I would encourage you to not be afraid to get your fingers dirty and enjoy planting things with your kid. It is a really wonderful thing and if you have any questions about gardening, there's always Yahoo answers, or you can send me a message and I should be able to help.
A thing about sunflowers: they love to be fed a lot. Once it starts to grow. Depending on what kind it is, if it shoots up, (some will grow over 10 feet tall) give it a generous amount of fertilizer. They deplete the soil really fast. Your little guy will be fascinated.

We went out into the back yard and was amazed to find the rabbit gone. We looked all over and finaly decided, that, the mommy must have missed it and came and took it home. End of story.

Can you put sunflower seeds in an Indian Curry?
Using Sunflower seeds in an Indian Curry just seems like a flavor mistake to me. If I'm not mistaken Sunflowers are traditionally used by American Indians, not in India; correct?

Take note, not all indians use poppy seeds in their curries, i'm not sure about the indians in india. But i'm sure about the indians in Singapore and Malaysia.

Stupid deer eating my birds' sunflower seeds...help?
How do I keep deer from eating the sunflower seeds out of my bird feeders? They lick and nudge the things until the seeds fall out. They can drain them in one night. They've become so "used" to me yelling at them that they're almost tame now.
I love deer, but not 8' from my house stealing my birdseed every evening and night!
I've tried hanging wind chimes from the pole...worked for one night. I've tried putting old tv antenna aluminum rods hanging there, I've put a plastic flower wind whirly-gig on the pole too...none of it deters them.
What else (reasonable -nothing like 'electric fence') can I do to stop them or scare them???

We had one neighbor that actualy shot at or near animals with a BB gun that he didn't like messing around in the wrong places. Its sad, but worked. BBs are not deadly if shot in the right place. I sound like a bad person!!

What happened to the sunflower oil? I use it to make soap. Does anybody know if canola oil are another oil can be substituted? Olive oil is great, but is way too expensive!

Back in December, I came across the concept of "Oil Pulling", or oil swishing. Basically you swish or 'pull' oil through and in and around your mouth, and then spit it out.
I began swishing sunflower oil in my mouth for 10-15 minutes in the mornings...
I noticed a change within 3 days, but I was skeptical and wanted to be absolutely certain.
I started doing this December 15th. I can honestly say that the plaque and tartar are gone and my teeth are whiter.
They're also much thicker and feel more solid in my mouth. Plus my gums are improving quite a bit.
Six months ago, I was looking at having all my teeth pulled and getting dentures. I don't have to do that anymore. :)
Oil pulling is DEFINITELY worth a try, imo!!!

Hey all, lately, these past two weeks, i've been snacking on salted sunflower seeds like no other. The reason i like them is because of the salt, but lately Ive also noticed bags under my eyes which may be the result of dehydration caused by the salted seeds...I eat A LOT like we bought two jumbo bags, each about the size of a watermelon, and I would say a contributed to a lot of that, so I was wondering if this much salt is gonna own me in the long run? thanks

Mother's Day Sunflower?
So I have a kindergartener, and like every kindergartener since the beginning of time, he has planted me the Mother's Day sunflower in the plastic cup.
The thing is, I have never planted a thing in my life. Never.
Now last week I put it on the patio (we live in an apartment) to get lots of sun. (It is a sunflower, after all). A few nights later a huge storm came through and knocked it off the balcony, crashing it to the ground. The soil was half gone, and filled with water.
Being the mommy that I am, I didn't want to break his heart and tell him that his very first MD gift was ruined, so I gathered my things, and snuckoff to Wal-Mart. I got new soil, and new seeds, and replanted. That was two days ago.
Today, I see a sprout! Is this the original seed? Is this the new seed? How can this be?! I just planted them two days ago! And now what do I do?
Jeepers creepers! Who knew one little gift could be so much work!
Mother's Day Sunflower?
Well, it all depends on what temperature the pot is at. Since mother's day was about 6 days ago, I'm going to guess that the sprout that came up was the original seed. I planted a bunch of sunflowers with my kids (and a whole bunch of other things) the day before mother's day, and quite a few of the sunflowers already sprouted by the middle of the week. Sunflowers were the first thing to come out. They grow very fast. You will be amazed.
I doubt this is the new seed, but it is possible if the pot was kept very warm (like 75-90 degrees it could sprout that fast.
I would encourage you to not be afraid to get your fingers dirty and enjoy planting things with your kid. It is a really wonderful thing and if you have any questions about gardening, there's always Yahoo answers, or you can send me a message and I should be able to help.
A thing about sunflowers: they love to be fed a lot. Once it starts to grow. Depending on what kind it is, if it shoots up, (some will grow over 10 feet tall) give it a generous amount of fertilizer. They deplete the soil really fast. Your little guy will be fascinated.

My kids had a pet rabbit that they just loved! One day about three months after I gave the rabbit away, my daughter came running in from school, saying. Daddy, I need to feed my rabbit! We went out into the back yard and was amazed to find the rabbit gone. We looked all over and finaly decided, that, the mommy must have missed it and came and took it home. End of story.

The thing is, I have never planted a thing in my life. Never.
Now last week I put it on the patio (we live in an apartment) to get lots of sun. (It is a sunflower, after all). A few nights later a huge storm came through and knocked it off the balcony, crashing it to the ground. The soil was half gone, and filled with water.
Being the mommy that I am, I didn't want to break his heart and tell him that his very first MD gift was ruined, so I gathered my things, and snuckoff to Wal-Mart. I got new soil, and new seeds, and replanted. That was two days ago.
Today, I see a sprout! Is this the original seed? Is this the new seed? How can this be?! I just planted them two days ago! And now what do I do?
Jeepers creepers! Who knew one little gift could be so much work!

I am a SUNFLOWER SEED ADDICT!!! The best brand that I have found so far is "Dakota Style" brand and I have to order them and have them shipped from South Dakota! I tried them, though, and now I"M SPOILED" for any other brand? Any other great brands out there that "The Sunflower Queen" should know about? Thanx!

As long as they are pre-shelled, there all good to me. The best sunflower seeds I ever had were when I grew my own. Nothing beats homegrown home prepared anything. I suppose if you have the money maybe an organic brand might be one to try, or one from the health food section of your grocery store.

I eat a lot of sunflower seeds. I munch on them throughout the day and don't snack on any other foods, other than fruit and my meals. Aside from being high in sodium, is there another reason I should steer away from them? (Oh, and they are Spitz brand)

As for spitz, they have preservatives, and too much sodium which is bad for you. Try eating plain ones which are actually healthy for you. Or switch to eating healthy snacks like baby carrots, strawberries, cherries, things like that.

I eat too much sunflower seeds,is that OK?
i consume a lot of sunflower seeds.needless to say as a snack,sometimes as lunch and dinner subsidy.

I'm planning on giving sunflower seeds as a wedding favor and I'm not sure how far in advance I can purchase them.

How many sunflower heads grown on one plant?
I planted some giant sunflower seeds but unfortunately only one plant survived. It is about seven feet high and has five sunflowers on it. Is this common? I thought only one flower grew on each stock.

One of them had 10 blooms of differant sizes of course they weighed the stalk down so I had to stake it. I was very surprised by all this as I didn't think about bird food sprouting. and never saw sunflowers with so many blooms. Now I have a new garden story for my friends. Guess you never know what mother nature will decide to do. That's what makes gardening so interesting.

Just buy a bag of sunflower seeds for feeding birds and plant like you would sweet corn. You'll have more sunflowers than you'll know what to do with!

Having a Spring/Sunflower themed wedding...Any ideas?
I am getting married next April ('08). I love sunflowers, and I must incorporate them into my theme.. I was thinking about Pale/Pastel Yellow and Chocolate Brown as my colors.
Possibly having the favors as small planting pots with our names written on them with sunflower seeds.
Any ideas? I am in the beginning stages so anything will help.
I also want to know if you think outside or inside for the reception?!

You can bring sunflowers in almost everywhere. Your centerpiece could be vases filled with sunflowers and the vases could be wrapped in silky brown ribbon. Favor sounds good. You could use decorative paper w/ sunflowers as the background inside your invitations. Michael's has small sunflowers that you could even add inside the envelopes to give your invite some pizazz. Try personalized napkins with sunflowers. Dress up your guest books,tables, or chairs with fabric w/ sunflowers on it. Hope I've been some help. The main areas to focus on initially should be your invitations, centerpieces, cake, favors, and decor. Try going to google.com and searchin for wedding supplies. You may find some items with sunflowers on them already. Good Luck :)!

The men can wear lapel flowers of maybe black eye susans which look a lot like sun flowers, just smaller. Instead of throwing rice at the end they can throw sun flower seeds. The cake can also be decorated with black eye susans and yellow mums to follow along with your theme.

I like to eat full Sunflower seeds in their shell because it tastes better, but some say you shouldn't. Is it bad to eat them in their shell?

I thought you might find this amusing lol. It doesn't hurt you to eat them hull and all my nephew does it all the time as did my grandpa. You have to chew them up good. Thats why they make different flavors of sunflower seeds. They are sort of like potato or apple the skin or hull is where most of the vitamins are at. good luck, best wishes.

Reply:The only Sunflower Vegetarian restaurants I know of are in Northern Virginia, one in Vienna and a newer location in Seven Corners. Apparently, Sunflower is a popular name for vegetarian places.

Reply:Keep it simple ... too much of any theme will look stupid if you overdo it.
Have the bridesmaids carry sunflower bouquets - they'll look good with black dresses, or maybe even blue (a nice robin's egg blue would be great). Place a single sunflower in a vase for a nice centerpiece. Have a simple stacked white cake, with rows of black and yellow ribbon lining the edges. Incorporate a subtle snflower logo onto your invitations and place cards.
Don't put sunflowers on EVERYTHING, and don't make everything black and yellow. Again, keep it simple - the more subtle your theme is, the classier your wedding will be.

What is the correct way to collect seeds from an already bloomed sunflower?
I scraped many seeds off of a few flowers and layed them out to dry. I left many other flowers alone just in case I wasn't doing it right.

You can begin to harvest sunflower seeds as soon as the center flowers turn brown or the backs of the heads turn yellow, to prevent birds from stealing them. Cut them, leaving a piece of stem to hang them in a well ventilated place to finish drying. Cover them with netting, paper sacks with holes or cheesecloth to catch falling seeds as they dry.
They can be allowed to dry on the stalk, but you'll have to cover them this way to keep the birds from eating them all before you can harvest them for yourself!
If you've grown sunflowers for the purpose of feeding birds, you can either leave them in the ground, or harvest the heads as above, then hang them in the yard or garden when they are ready. This method has an advantage in that you can dole out the heads over the winter, instead of seeing the seed all eaten within a few weeks.
Reply:When they hang their heads and droop, the seed heads are dry. There will be no green, underripe seeds. I cut off the head, shuck the seeds from the head, lay the seeds on a cookie sheet to allow them to dry throughly. The only problem that I have had is with squirrels and chipmunks, These critters seem to know when the sunflower is "just right" and may beat you to the seed. If you have varmint trouble, you may wants to cover the heads with light cheesecloth until the heads are totally dry.

Sunflower Minstrels c1800?
Started looking into family tree, came across my great grandfather who was a Sunflower Minstrel, has to be around mid 1800's. Have tried all that I can think of, but having no success. Act was like, I suppose, musical hall, early black and white minstrels, etc. I get a lot of hits in America but know that he never travelled away from England. How can I make sure sunflower seeds will be OK for next summer?
Last summer I grew wonderful sunflowers. Last fall, I kept many heads in order to use the seeds to grow them again this year. As I wasn't sure about the quality of the seeds I kept, I also bought new ones from the store. Unfortunately, only the new seeds from the store actually grow. Seeds I kept from last year's sunflowers do not grow at all. What is the technique to keep sunflower seeds and make sure I will be able to grow them OK next year?

Dry the seeds and store in a jar in the refrigerator. Better would be to vacuum pack them in a food saver bag. Now you know that if the plant the seeds you are saving is a hybrid then the seeds will not be true to the plant. That is they will be either one of the parents plants but not the hybrid they came from.

Sunflower seed stuck in throat!?
I was eating sunflower seeds, and a piece of the shell got stuck on the left side of my throat! Right away I felt like throwing up, but nothing. And I ate 3 banana's and lots of water, thinking it would push it down. I need some help! Everyonce and awhile I get a sharp pain from it! I'm pretty sure it's not the entire shell or seed, just a little sliver. I'm really scared and I really want to get it out. Please Help ASAP!

Try eating several slices of soft bread. That will usually dislodge anything stuck in the throat.
If the pain is still there after you've tried that and it feels like the shell is still stuck, go to the doctor or your ER/walk-in clinic. You don't want a throat infection because of it.

Sunflower growing question?
I am growing a sunflower and it seems to be growing multiple heads on its lower leaves. I picked a few of them off. Should I pick the rest off. I think I remember my mom doing that with a tomato plant saying that it make the rest of the plant grow stronger.

I guess you are not hurting the flower by removing the side blooms, but because it is a multi-bloom type you are probably not helping it to make one enormous flower either. Why not just enjoy as many blooms as the plant is willing to make? The plant will live and flower longer, however, if you remove the blooms BEFORE they start to develop seeds. Once a flower has set seeds it believes that it has accomplished its purpose of continuing the species, and then it will begin to die.

I am a SUNFLOWER SEED ADDICT!!! The best brand that I have found so far is "Dakota Style" brand and I have to order them and have them shipped from South Dakota! Sunflower seeds, just how bad are they for you?
I eat a lot of sunflower seeds. I munch on them throughout the day and don't snack on any other foods, other than fruit and my meals. Aside from being high in sodium, is there another reason I should steer away from them? (Oh, and they are Spitz brand)

As for spitz, they have preservatives, and too much sodium which is bad for you. Try eating plain ones which are actually healthy for you. Or switch to eating healthy snacks like baby carrots, strawberries, cherries, things like that.
