Germinating sunflower seeds?

I recently planted about 20 different varieties of sunflower seeds. About 5 of these popped after 4 or 5 days, it has now been 10 days and no sign of the rest. Is this normal ? If so, when can I expect to see them?

Germinating sunflower seeds?
maybe you should do something to make the soil better(like adding some more fertilizer). that can be the solution but there are other smart answerers who may know more than me lol.
Reply:My favorite, the Mammoth Russian Sunflower, can take up to 14 days for germination. Also make sure the soil is draining properly. They can take a drought, so over watering can sometimes be a factor in slow germination. Test the soil with your finger. If the soil is wet sooner than 1/2" deep, it may be too much water. After the plant is well established a depth of 4" to wet/moist soil is more appropriate. :)
Reply:I recently bought 6 varieties of sunflower and, rather than sow them outdoors like it said on the packet, I popped them in a propogator to give them the best start. Mine have taken anything from a week to a week and a half to germinate but at least I know that this way I will be guaranteed some plants! Some of the varieties take longer than others I guess but it all depends on where you have sown them, how deeply, what the soil conditions are like and whether they are getting enough sun and water.

I think you'll just have to suck it and see, if a month has passed and there is still no sign of anything happening then the rest have perished in one way or another!
Reply:large seed like sunflowers germinate better if the seed is soaked before planting ... if you have directly sowen in to the ground mice just love them them.
Reply:Could be the little woodland creatures got ahold of the seeds and if that is the case, you WON'T see them germinate! Sunflower seeds are VERY popular with all of the birds and squirrels that I know.

Depending on how fresh the seeds were, it might take up to 2 weeks to see anything green pop up; also, depending on where you live, the weather will have an influence.

The show up on my back lawn by the thousands every spring because I feed the seeds to the birds and squirrels.

Have you planted those nice red sunflowers? They looked awesome in the Burpee catalog.

Happy green thumbing. ;-)
Reply:wet a rag real well, put the seeds on it and fold it over. after bout 24 hours then plant. that has been the only way i even got them to grow. good luck.

(make sure rag is wet enough)
Reply:different varieties germinate at different times it is possible that they might be rotten give some more time if nothing happens replant
